History

Numerology is the ancient study of numbers. The word 'Numerology' has been drawn from the Latin word ‘numerus' (number) and the Greek word -‘logia', from ‘logos' (thought, and expression). The origin of numerology can be traced back to thousands of years, and variations of it can also be found in most cultures throughout history. Numerology has been in practice for thousands of years and is found in most ancient cultures of the world. It is of general belief that even before the Greeks and Romans the ancient cultures of China, Japan, India, Babylon, and Egypt were familiar with numerology but most still credit Pythagoras as being the 'father of numerology.' In Numerology each letter of the alphabet has a numerical value, and each number has a related celestial vibration. Combining the letters of a name and the date of birth provides an interrelation of vibrations. This unique and personal combination allows for insight as to your character, strengths and weaknesses, natural talents, motivations, and life purpose as an integral part of the cosmic plan. Numerology is one of the most important methods used to gain insight and understanding into one's Self and others. Pythagoras, a Greek mathematician and philosopher (569-470 B.C.), believed that reality is mathematical. He viewed the entire universe as being composed of mathematical patterns and was adamant that all things can be expressed in numbers that correspond to energy patterns of vibrations. The teachings of Pythagoras were adopted by the notable Socrates and Plato and studied by early Christian scholars, including St. Augustine. This ultimately led to the expansion of numerology during the regeneration, and it still continues to be deliberated upon and practiced even today.

Types of Numerology

There are different types of numerology systems available for study. The Chaldean, the Pythagorean (Western), and the Kabbalah are three of the most popular numerological systems in use today. Each of these systems calculates numbers differently and offers different interpretation of one's life.

Chaldean Number System

The oldest system of numerology is Chaldean Numerology system which has its roots in Ancient Babylon. In this system, the numbers assigned to the letters are not determined by alphabetical order (as the Pythagorean method), but rather by the vibration of each specific letter. Chaldean Numerology uses a number formula based on calculating 1 to 8 with no alphabet letter assigned to the number 9. The reason for this is that the Chaldeans considered the number 9 as a holy or sacred number; therefore, it is kept apart from other vibrations, except when it results as the final sum.

Pythagorean (Western) Number System

The Pythagorean Numerology system is said to have originated from the Greek mathematician. Pythagorean Numerology is the most popular numerology system used today. This number system assigns the number value by the sequence of the Western alphabet and uses a number formula based on calculating 1 to 9.

Kabbalah Numerology

The Kabbalah Numerology system originated in Hebrew mysticism. The Kabbalah number system only analyzes the name. This system has assigned twenty-two vibrations ranging from 1 to 400. Since this system only analyzes the name and not the birth date, it is not widely used among Numerologists. Though numerology is probably the least known or understood of the metaphysical sciences it is enjoying renaissance in popularity. Today it is most often used to discover secret meanings and to predict the future. Numerology has much more in common with Astrology than anything that Pythagoras may have been involved in. Clearly, the eleven (1-9 plus the 2 master numbers) may be considered in sympathy, if not entirely in harmony, with the twelve signs of the Zodiac: a science always directed toward self analysis and growth, rather than ‘fortune telling’ device that it has become considered by the uninitiated. in Indian Vedic Numerology, numbers are used as a key to understand human behaviour, human personality and its subsequent destiny. Indian Vedic Numerology is based on the vibratory resonance of each number. Vedic Numerology is a holy science as it enables one to look deeply into the wheel of karma and adjust the attitude and behaviour in the world. The history of Numerology defines that Vedic Numerology subscribes to the belief that the soul chooses to manifest in an individual`s life expression by their birth data and the name vibration to evolve further in consciousness. The numbers define the psychological profile, the strength and weaknesses people are born with and will learn and refine through in this lifetime. The practice of Numerology involves the number from one to nine and the nine planets. In India it is practiced widely by the `sages` since the time of the Vedas. Although it has been mentioned that Numerology is an accurate way of ascertaining human destiny, it also includes the involvement of `Karma` of human beings.
